Supreme Court urges: Clean air needs constant care, not seasonal attention
Court demands clarity: What’s the plan to tackle air pollution, short-term fixes and long-term solutions alike?
Supreme Court demands roadmap: Pollution boards to explain how they’ll tackle crisis now and in the years ahead.SC demands report on Delhi’s toxic air, says issue must rise above politics and ego battles.
Breaking from the routine blame game, Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi made it clear that stubble burning isn’t about politics or ego. They reminded everyone that Delhi’s choking air is a public health crisis, not a turf war, and called on authorities to focus on real fixes instead of finger-pointing.
Challenging the routine narrative that stubble burning is the main culprit behind Delhi-NCR’s toxic air, Chief Justice Surya Kant—himself from a farming family in Hissar, Haryana—pointed out that the practice was widespread even during the COVID lockdowns. Yet, people could still see clear blue skies then. His observation underlined that other significant factors must be contributing to the pollution crisis, and the debate cannot be oversimplified to just one cause.
Chief Justice Surya Kant made it clear that the court does not wish to single out farmers over stubble burning, noting that it would be unfair to place the entire burden on a community that has little voice in the courtroom. He stressed that the debate around stubble burning should not be allowed to spiral into a political blame game or an ego clash, but instead remain focused on finding real solutions to the air pollution crisis.
Chief Justice Surya Kant urged the Centre to lay out clear, concrete steps that agencies like the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), and others are taking to combat Delhi-NCR’s pollution crisis. He stressed the need for both immediate interventions and long-term strategies, reminding that the fight against toxic air cannot be vague or delayed.
The Court has scheduled the matter for further hearing on December 10, keeping the pressure on authorities to deliver a detailed roadmap.
